Michael Mathias Grail
20 January 1947 - 26 February 2017
Michael
Mathias Grail, 70, of Portland Ore., passed away on Sunday, Feb. 26,
2017, from heart complications. Michael was born Jan. 20, 1947, to
Mathias Grail and Virginia Grail in Shipshewana, Ind.
Mike was an honor student and graduate of Shipshewana High School.
His love for higher education kept him busy in extracurricular activities
such as science club, chess club, and band where Mike played a French
horn and eventually became a drum major.
In 1964 Mike accepted an appointment to the Air force Academy where
he became an Air Force officer, obtained a Bachelor of Science degree,
and met the love of his life, Cheryl Marie Hunke. They were married
June 7, 1968. Mike and Cheryl remained married until his passing.
Mike continued his education throughout his Air Force career earning
a master's degree in business and a double master's in communication.
Mike's thirst for adventure kept him busy through his Air Force career
traveling to remote locations across the world
locations like
Turkey and Korea. While these destinations were typically slated as
remote tours, Mike always insisted his family accompany him.
His retirement after 20 years from the United States Air Force gave
Mike the tools he needed to operate a business and company of his
own design. Today this company continues his legacy by providing excellence
and integrity in instructional design products for consumers such
as Boeing.
Mike found joy and beauty in all that he did. Preferring to be near
water, he spent his time sailing, fishing, and scuba diving.
Mike is survived by his wife, Cheryl Marie Grail; his two boys, Jeffrey
Grail and Gregory Grail; his sister Cynthia Grail; and six beautiful
grandchildren: Chelsea, Christopher, Alex, Cobe, Charlotte and Connor.
